Finding Cold Creek 7/8 May 2011

Saturday

Neil and Jacqui were first to turn up at the lodge and kindly got the fire started and their beds made. Len and Sharon were next and just had to get the dessert cooked. Then Hilary and Newton arrived all organized as usual.

The KOPAC catering crew surpassed themselves, with a starter of beautiful pumpkin soup, followed by Roast Pork with vegetables, finished off with two (please cook again) desserts Feijoa crumble, and stuffed Pears in red wine. Nearly up with the standard of Master Chef. A nice relaxing night Good company, Great food!!!

Sunday

Neil headed off to work and the rest of us had a leisurely start, waiting for the rain to stop. The sun came out and it was up and away following the Hunters track to the RTM. Coats were the order of the day as the bush was just plain slushy.

Turning right over the natural bridge we made our way towards Cold Creek. After many “is this it?” we took a turn upwards following a small running stream. We thought it was the right place but with further investigation (fighting supple jack, over logs and into wet bogs) we returned to the RMT.

Len took a sprint further on and the rest of us had a bite to eat. He seemed to be gone for ages however after about 20 min he returned with “I think I have found it, a beautiful waterfall and cavern” so Jacqui, Newton and Len headed off to see the source. What they found was just a stream with a waterfall, climbing up over this, it was discovered it was just that more stream. Were they in the right place? This is still being debated.

Looks like there is another trip to the area to verify the location.

Like all experienced tramping people we didn’t have a GPS, didn’t have a map and didn’t have a compass. Just great fun!!

Finding the source of cold creek, to be continued……..
