SNOW DAY 2011 (28 Aug)

We checked the Web Cam on the Stratford Ski Field and all pictures showed Great Snow , Great Weather and NO WIND. So two extended families set off – the smallest being 2 1/2 years old

All of us met at the Stratford Ski Field Car park and climbed into our winter woollies.

Setting off up the track it wasn’t long before the littlest member needed help as the snow was just too deep and this came in the form of a blue barrel cut in half and skilfully towed by Luke – Thank you.

All 9 of us made steady progress up to the public shelter and once there Jayden & Cody were off having fun with Luke & Len. Amy got her tickets and was off snowboarding – she had several runs before returning for lunch. The others either took pictures or looked after the smaller members who were having a much needed snack to tide them over till lunch. Watching up at the top tow we saw some really adventurous skiers and knowing how steep it is made my hair stand on end.

We all joined up for lunch then off Luke Len Jayden & Cody we went to a higher slope for sledging joined by Sharon taking photos. While Amy, Mia & Hilary headed off up the learners slope so that Mia & Amy could snowboard down while Newton took photos. This all took a lot of effort due to the deep nature of the snow.

Hilary then joined Sharon on a Blue Half Barrel run but both of us decided that is was rather bumpy and needed some serious bum movement to have any sort of control over where you where going to end up.

Well it was time to call TIME and we all started our slow head back down the track to the car park. Once we got passed the flying fox Amy picked up her board and wanted to put Mia on it for a good ride down but she had other thoughts.

Mia liked the idea of Nana & Poppa pushing/pulling her down on her little sledge but this was just too slow so it was onto her mother’s board and she was back at the car park in rather quick time while Nana & Poppa trudged behind.

What a great day – All kids had fun. All adults had fun. Thanks to all – with everyone’s help we all got there and back safely.

Traders & Whalers – Tawhiti Museum 14th Aug

The weather was really rather stormy so it was nice to head indoors and see the exciting new exhibition at Tawhiti. A study of the Taranaki Coast from 1820 – 1840’s

A can do attitude between the South Taranaki District Council and Nigel Olge’s Tawhiti Museum has achieved a must see exhibit. Unfortunately we were unable to take photos inside but if you Google ‘Tawhiti Museum -Traders & Whalers’ you will see some of the marvellous model’s we saw on our boat ride.

Outside the entrance you wonder just how a cruise could happen, Len and I were a bit late, so headed inside the cave wondering where everyone else was. (If I had looked at my cell phone I would have known, but I digress) Our eyes slowly adjusted to the low light and we spied some of the mining exhibits, then a ghostly surprise. Out of the gloom we came across a couple of official looking gentlemen. Handing over our tickets we quietly entered the boat. It descended into the water. As we quietly headed off our guide answered our questions, probably not the ones he expected but hey how did the boat move so quietly and without a gondola in sight, did we have to pick up a paddle (no we were tourists today) how deep was the water really, who made that etc. etc. Apparently the Weta Workshop helped with the casting of the walls; rocks etc. and the models came to life as we putted along. ( a little electric motor made all the difference)

Gun fire was heard and pigs and animals squealed. The early wars with musket s and cannons were portrayed with life size figures (just as you would expect from Tawhiti). Our Journey ended too soon and it was all out and up the stairs to more interesting history. One that intrigued me was the model of Motoura Island set up as Dicky Barrett’s home at the time. Interesting reading and next time we cruise round the island I will have a new perspective of how things used to be.

Coming out we found Hilary, Newton who had also been around. Nola was leaving her tour for after lunch, which we enjoyed at the Museum’s CafĂ©.

A great break from the normal spring fever down on the farm.

Sharon

Kaitake’s Revisited: 29th May

Left to right Jacqui, Len, Hilary, Cliff. Photo by Sharon

Using Jacqui’s orienteering map Hilary, Jacqui, Cliff, Len and myself headed up the Kaitake ranges via Surrey Road and Davies hill track. As we neared the Kaitake summit we headed off to find Goat rock, with a little bit of scrambling, ducking and exclamation marks it was found. As it was a trifle cool standing around Len decided to look for a mythical grave site – we waited as he disappeared over the edge of the gorge through gigi’s and supple jack – he couldn’t hear us, we couldn’t hear him, (well what are cell phones for, you guessed right he didn’t get my message until he had returned to us) turning to go down he appeared out of no where on top of a tree exclaiming how he had circumnavigated the rock to no avail. By now time was getting on and we proceeded on down on a pretty good track. To our surprise we met a group of locals going up to the summit and out Lucy’s gulley, not sure of their location, we gave them a map and hopefully they are now home safe and sound. Maybe it was easier going up.

Our exit point was not quite back at the vehicles so we navigated our way through farm land, posh houses and lodges eventually finding the Kaitake Road. With a quick walk it was back to the vehicles and home.

Thanks for coming everyone.

Sharon

Stent Road Walk 22nd May

Well this ended up to be an exploration of the Waikirikiri Lagoon, sand dunes, and beach walk. The weather was not kind and it was great to find another place right in our own back yard that we hadn’t been to. Without getting too wet.

The actual location is at the end of Komene Rd, and this is another road end with interesting features.

To start the road itself seems to be the grave yard of chimney’s, long forgotten houses with only the chimney left to identify the old homestead. A fact of our times with farms amalgamating and less people in the community.

Then a new lagoon right on the beach front with large sand dunes between it and the sea, this was started in April of 2009 with the lagoon fenced and plantings progressing.

With a gentle walk north you meet the Stony River with all the debris from past floods.

Turning south you wander along a sandy beach with loads of drift wood and a few shells.

Thanks Hilary and Newton for keeping me company. Hope to see a work of art in your garden soon.

Sharon

Finding Cold Creek 7/8 May 2011

Saturday

Neil and Jacqui were first to turn up at the lodge and kindly got the fire started and their beds made. Len and Sharon were next and just had to get the dessert cooked. Then Hilary and Newton arrived all organized as usual.

The KOPAC catering crew surpassed themselves, with a starter of beautiful pumpkin soup, followed by Roast Pork with vegetables, finished off with two (please cook again) desserts Feijoa crumble, and stuffed Pears in red wine. Nearly up with the standard of Master Chef. A nice relaxing night Good company, Great food!!!

Sunday

Neil headed off to work and the rest of us had a leisurely start, waiting for the rain to stop. The sun came out and it was up and away following the Hunters track to the RTM. Coats were the order of the day as the bush was just plain slushy.

Turning right over the natural bridge we made our way towards Cold Creek. After many “is this it?” we took a turn upwards following a small running stream. We thought it was the right place but with further investigation (fighting supple jack, over logs and into wet bogs) we returned to the RMT.

Len took a sprint further on and the rest of us had a bite to eat. He seemed to be gone for ages however after about 20 min he returned with “I think I have found it, a beautiful waterfall and cavern” so Jacqui, Newton and Len headed off to see the source. What they found was just a stream with a waterfall, climbing up over this, it was discovered it was just that more stream. Were they in the right place? This is still being debated.

Looks like there is another trip to the area to verify the location.

Like all experienced tramping people we didn’t have a GPS, didn’t have a map and didn’t have a compass. Just great fun!!

Finding the source of cold creek, to be continued……..

Sharon.

The Mayonnaise Jar

When things in your life seem, almost too much to handle,
When 24 hours in a day is not enough,
Remember the mayonnaise jar and 2 cups of coffee.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.

He then asked the students, if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked us a box of pebbles and poured
them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled in the open areas between the golf balls.

He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar.
Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous 'yes'.

The professor then produced 2 cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.

'Now,' said the professor, as laughter subsided, 'I want you to recognise that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things - family, children, health, friends and favourite passions - things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, house and car.
The sand is everything else - the small stuff.

If you put the sand into the jar first,' he continued, 'there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life.

If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you.

So.....

Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children, take time for medical checkups, take your partner out to dinner.

There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal.

'Take care of the golf balls first - the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.'

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented. The professor smiled. 'I'm glad you asked.' It just goes to show that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend.

KOPAC Mystery Location Challenge

Well this proved quite a debate, however was really enjoyable.

We are going to try and do another this year, so if you have photo’s that can be used let one of the committee know. We will get a couple out for you in the next Newsletter.

The Results:

1st Newton & Hilary 143.5 points

2nd Sharon 120 points

3rd Jacqui & Neil 80.5 points (even though we got them all. It doesn't pay to miss the meeting where the decisions are made!! - Jacqui)

4th Willie 75 points

5th Len 20 points

There was really a couple of interesting challenges in this competition. First you had to know were in Taranaki these places are. Second how do you take a photo with the photographer in it? Thank you to the inventor of digital cameras. Then trying not to upset other drivers as you looked around or stopped suddenly. The judging was also a challenge, as every photographer had their own opinion.

A lot of controversy but good fun

KOPAC Presidents Report 2011

30th March 2011

Welcome to our 2011 Annual General Meeting.

KOPAC – What does it mean to you?

Kahui – yes we have visited the Hut

Outdoor – we certainly do outdoor projects

Pursuits – we are trying very hard to keep the club going

Alpine – overseas students have been to the summit with our help

Club – a few people doing fun stuff, hoping to encourage more people to do the same.

I believe the past year has been difficult for the club, with many other sports and activities impacting on membership and participation, it has been noted in other publications that sports clubs around the country are having the same issues and there seems to be no miracle cure for this.

The events we have organized throughout the year remain interesting and varied. Something for everyone we hope.

So what have we completed in the past year?

Finally saw Len P’s replica lighthouse on Bayley Rd.

Had a lovely relaxing weekend at Kiritahere in the rain.

Have been to Kahui Hut and beyond to Black Rock for an explore.

Have seen the Pouakai Rafts.

Had a BBQ at Mangamahoe, completed mountain bike trips to Marton and Ohakune.

The Lodge has had regular visits with the wood shed re designed and stocked with wood from Len P’s. All ready for winter.

Other places we have visited were Lake Rotokare, Tupare Gardens, Arthouse Theatre, Kaupokanui Falls, there has also been orienteering, SAR Training, and Club talks.

Our magazine is still published with the committee adopting a bi-monthly edition to save time and travel, our committee meetings have also taken on the same format – it has taken a bit more forward thinking but has freed up more time for the committee members.

Elaine has been Editor since March 2004 and has diligently recorded our articles and information, thank you for your valuable time. You have suffered silently for 7 years. Your work has been greatly appreciated; Elaine has decided it is time for someone else to take on this task.

Thank you to all who helped with the slink calf run, it has once again proved very profitable.

For that something a little different we have the KOPAC Photo Mystery location Challenge – Good luck to everyone. It has certainly made me take more notice of my surroundings.

Our summit climb this year unfortunately had to be cancelled due to bad weather both Saturday and Sunday, however Len A and Higgi have taken a few up mid–week so they can achieve this goal. Thank you for taking the time away from the farm to do this.

The Lodge is getting regular use and it is pleasing to note most look after and care for it, there are some however who need a quiet reminder.

We will also have a little change in our meeting tonight and at the conclusion of our AGM a general committee meeting will be held to do a trips programme for the next couple of months, so get your thinking caps on, and let us know where and what you wish to do next.

Thank you to all who have taken time out from your busy lives to venture out, I’m looking forward to more adventures in the next 12 months.

LAKE ROTAKARE FENCELINE WANDER

WARNING = only try this in SUMMER

Unless you have crampons to stick yourself to the clay!!

We were met at the gate by Site manager Simon Collins and he talked about how we should check our cars, packs for any incoming migrants eg cats rats mice etc.

We then followed him down to a class room type building that had been transported to site and was in the throws of being redesigned/redecorated by a band of willing helpers.

Here we were shown a cut down version of the FENCE and how it was constructed to keep out as many predators as possible with several specimens being shown to us in a taxidermy presentation. Also the ink pads that track the presence of pest animals and insects movements as well – now that was fascinating!!

It was then time to walk outside and get pointed in the right direction – which happened to be skyward – UP UP UP – but the views just got better – at the highest point they had kindly put a seat where we stopped and enjoyed the 360° view and also talked to 3 fence inspectors out on their rounds.

Later we stopped for a bite to eat on another viewing point.

We inspected water filled Tubs – not sure what they were for other than to drown bumble bees!! and various tree planting – and how they get those huge posts in the ground on such an angle – glad I was busy on those days!!

At about the half way mark we had seen the best views and it was so darn hot that we decided to drop down onto a track that made its way in the shade back to our car.

What an interesting day – Thanks – Nola Newton Hilary

Support your club at the AGM, at Pungarehu Golf Club, 7.30pm.
Elaine is standing down after many years as the magazine editor so we will be needing a replacement - think about volunteering or asking someone you know.

Taranaki Anniversary weekend trip

We are organising a trip to the Central Plateau for 12-14 March. The basic plan is:

  • cycle the Pukehinau Loop (28km, grade 3, from SH47 along part of 42 Traverse and back out to SH47, including visit to Okupata Caves)

  • cycle the 'new' Old Coach Rd (part of the National Cycleway, 14km descent, grade 2, from Horopito to Ohakune via the spectacular Hapuawhenua viaduct and old tunnel)

  • tramp somewhere (Lake Surprise?), or another ride

  • staying for 3 nights in a ski lodge in Ohakune ($20 per night)

  • activities can be moved around to suit the group and the weather

So there is a bit of biking planned, but alternate tramping activities or sightseeing are available.
Contact Neil & Jacqui Sinclair 06 7510676 by 14th Feb to book a place or suggest alternate activities.
