Kaitake’s Revisited: 29th May

Left to right Jacqui, Len, Hilary, Cliff. Photo by Sharon

Using Jacqui’s orienteering map Hilary, Jacqui, Cliff, Len and myself headed up the Kaitake ranges via Surrey Road and Davies hill track. As we neared the Kaitake summit we headed off to find Goat rock, with a little bit of scrambling, ducking and exclamation marks it was found. As it was a trifle cool standing around Len decided to look for a mythical grave site – we waited as he disappeared over the edge of the gorge through gigi’s and supple jack – he couldn’t hear us, we couldn’t hear him, (well what are cell phones for, you guessed right he didn’t get my message until he had returned to us) turning to go down he appeared out of no where on top of a tree exclaiming how he had circumnavigated the rock to no avail. By now time was getting on and we proceeded on down on a pretty good track. To our surprise we met a group of locals going up to the summit and out Lucy’s gulley, not sure of their location, we gave them a map and hopefully they are now home safe and sound. Maybe it was easier going up.

Our exit point was not quite back at the vehicles so we navigated our way through farm land, posh houses and lodges eventually finding the Kaitake Road. With a quick walk it was back to the vehicles and home.

Thanks for coming everyone.

Stent Road Walk 22nd May

Well this ended up to be an exploration of the Waikirikiri Lagoon, sand dunes, and beach walk. The weather was not kind and it was great to find another place right in our own back yard that we hadn’t been to. Without getting too wet.

The actual location is at the end of Komene Rd, and this is another road end with interesting features.

To start the road itself seems to be the grave yard of chimney’s, long forgotten houses with only the chimney left to identify the old homestead. A fact of our times with farms amalgamating and less people in the community.

Then a new lagoon right on the beach front with large sand dunes between it and the sea, this was started in April of 2009 with the lagoon fenced and plantings progressing.

With a gentle walk north you meet the Stony River with all the debris from past floods.

Turning south you wander along a sandy beach with loads of drift wood and a few shells.

Thanks Hilary and Newton for keeping me company. Hope to see a work of art in your garden soon.

Notice for Help!!

Well it looks like the holiday is over for those down on the farm, the lambs are bleating and the calves are bellowing.

Slink Calf Run is once again up and operational.

Can you help? This is a great fundraiser for the club!

We have 4 dates, but the dates we require people for are:

12th Sept (Mon) and 4th Oct (Tues)

Contact me as soon as you can. We need at least two vehicles. And it also helps to have one driver and one picker upper per vehicle.
